A DMV renewal smog check is the biennial emissions test required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles to renew your vehicle registration. Every two years, most gasoline and diesel vehicles must pass a smog inspection. Your DMV renewal notice will indicate whether a smog check is required and whether you need to visit a STAR-certified station.
When Do I Need a DMV Renewal Smog Check?
The DMV sends renewal notices approximately 60 days before your registration expires. If your notice says “smog certification required,” you must complete the test before you can renew. Your smog certificate is valid for 90 days from the test date, so do not wait until the last minute. We recommend scheduling your smog check as soon as you receive the notice.
Which Vehicles Are Exempt from Smog Checks?
- Vehicles that are 8 model years old or newer (these are exempt from biennial testing but still need a smog check for change of ownership)
- Fully electric vehicles (no gasoline engine)
- Natural gas vehicles with a GVWR over 14,000 lbs
- Motorcycles
- Trailers
- Diesel vehicles model year 1997 and older
